Teaching is more than just a job, it’s a passion. But with the rising cost of living and the extra time many teachers have over summer break, tutoring can be a great way to earn extra income while using your skills to help students succeed. Whether you’re looking to tutor during the school year or over the summer, here’s how you can set yourself up for success as a tutor.

1. Find Your Niche

Not all tutoring is the same! Think about your strengths and what grade levels or subjects you enjoy teaching the most. Some common tutoring niches include:

  • Early Literacy Tutoring – Helping young students strengthen their phonics, reading, and writing skills.
  • Math Support – Working with students who struggle with foundational skills or need advanced enrichment.
  • Test Prep – Preparing students for state assessments or entrance exams.

Choosing a niche helps you stand out and makes it easier to find students who need exactly what you offer. Personally, I only offer tutoring services I am very skilled and knowledgeable about.

2. Set Up a Smooth Onboarding Process

Before jumping into sessions, it’s important to gather key information from both parents and students. A solid onboarding process makes you look professional and ensures sessions are productive.

Some important steps include:
A Meet-the-Tutor Flyer – Introduce yourself, your experience, and what you offer.
Parent & Student Questionnaires – Get insight into learning styles, strengths, and goals.
Tutoring Contract – Clearly outline expectations for payment, cancellations, and scheduling. Believe me, I learned the hard way. Having a contract is so important.

These steps not only help you look polished but also prevent common issues like last-minute cancellations and no-shows.

3. Structure Your Sessions for Success

A well-structured tutoring session keeps students engaged and ensures progress. Here’s a simple breakdown of how to plan a one-hour session:

  • 15 minutes: Review previous material with a warm-up activity.
  • 30 minutes: Targeted instruction based on student needs.
  • 5 minute break: Keep it short and refreshing!
  • 10 minutes: Wrap up with a review and a preview of the next session.

Using end-of-session slips is a great way to provide quick feedback to parents and track student progress as well as remind families for their next session date!

4. Use Engaging Materials

Every tutoring session should feel different from a regular school lesson. Try incorporating games, and give student choice. If you tutor multiple students or different grade levels, having pre-made tutoring kits can save you hours of prep time. This was the most stressful thing for me when I first started… simply figuring out what to do every session! Having tutoring kits ready to go is a true lifesaver.

5. Maximize Your Earning Potential

To make tutoring a sustainable side hustle, consider:

  • Offering summer tutoring bundles for parents who want consistent support.
  • Charging for small group tutoring to increase your hourly rate. For example, you can tutor 3 students at once and make a high amount for the hour, but families pay less for a group rate.
  • Creating a simple website or social media page to attract more clients. I do a Facebook page which is really nice to share my services online as well as Facebook groups (think local community groups or mom groups).

Ready to Get Started?

If you’re looking to start tutoring but don’t want to spend hours creating materials, I have a variety of resources to help! From a FREE Meet the Tutor flyer to a ready to use and editable tutor contract, parent and student questionnaires, a tutor planner kit, and session-tracking slips, everything is designed to make tutoring easier. I also offer structured tutoring kits for kindergarteners moving into 1st grade, 3rd graders moving into 4th (ELA), and 5th graders moving into 6th (math). Being able to focus on teaching, instead of the planning will save you hours of time.

Wishing you all the best on your tutoring journey!
